Julian Friers
Julian Friers RUA

Born in Bangor, Northern Ireland in 1956, Julian Friers is acknowledged as one of Europe’s foremost wildlife painters. His achievements include solo exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institute (Washington DC), The Mall Galleries (London), and The Burj Al Arab (Dubai, UAE).

After a brief period at the Belfast College of Art he became a professional wildlife painter and had his first solo exhibition in 1977. Having used a variety of media in those early years he has come to rely almost exclusively on oil paint to convey sentience in his imagery. His method owes much to the 'Irish Impressionists' by whom he has been strongly influenced. Respect for the medium is all important and is evident in his technique which is fluid and loose, often appearing to be near the edge of control. Working wet-in-wet combined with layering seems to invigorate the paint and lend itself well to the combination of science and expression.

His paintings are eagerly sought by collectors and are found in a number of prestigious public and private collections internationally and in several Royal collections within the Middle East. He designed the first Irish Duck stamp for the American conservation programme and also provided the paintings to illustrate `Gifts of the Desert`, a lavishly produced book commissioned by the International Foundation for the Conservation and Development of Wildlife, dedicated to the conservation achievement of HRH Prince Sultan ibn Abdul Aziz Al Saud of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

He is fortunate to have received many opportunities to exhibit internationally with the world's most respected wildlife painters. In recent years his reputation as an artist has taken him to Holland, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and the USA.
